The Digging Deeper Project was commissioned by the Mine Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) in 2007 to address a number of Wran Mine Safety Review recommendations on fatigue, consultation, WHS management systems and safety incentive schemes that had been reported to be having negative WHS impacts in the NSW mining and extractives industry.
The project was commissioned by MSAC and Trade and Investment NSW who engaged an independent consulting consortium lead by Shaw Idea Pty Ltd to undertake the project. Their report showed that up to 30% of mine sites are pro-actively working towards best practice in WHS. A further 43% of sites are currently in a transitional stage and about 27% are currently reactive to WHS issues. By working closely with industry the MSAC will address areas that need improvement.
Digging Deeper identifies an underlying theme across the industry – the need to get the basics of WHS management right. The Platinum Rules codify the fundamental steps the industry should take to more effectively manage WHS.
